Asahikawa Hotels - About

Located at the northern tip of the Japanese archipelago, Hokkaido is Japan’s second largest island, equal in size to Czechoslovakia or Panama. The city of Asahikawa lies at a latitude of 43°C, the same as Florence, Italy and Toronto, Canada. But Asahikawa’s winters are incomparably colder because of the effects of the freezing currents that flow through the Pacific Ocean.

The minus 41.0°C measured here in 1902 is the lowest temperature ever recorded in Japan. On the other hand, because Asahikawa lies in a basin, its summers are sultry and the temperature can sometimes exceed 30°C. The seasonal extremes are very severe.

Asahikawa lies at the foot of the Daisetsuzan mountain range, known as “The Roof of Hokkaido,” at the confluence of four rivers that flow from the 2,000-meter peaks. Watered by these rivers, paddy fields have spread along the shores, making Asahikawa one of Japan’s foremost granary regions. Thanks to its deeps forests, there are also a considerable number of lumber-related companies, with more than 100 furniture makers and large paper-making plants situated in the area. Well served by transportation routes, Asahikawa is a central administrative and economic hub, and has grown into the second largest city in Hokkaido after Sapporo, the prefectural capital.

Asahikawa (旭川市 Asahikawa-shi?) is a city located in Kamikawa Subprefecture, Hokkaidō, Japan. The city is the capital of the subprefecture and the second-largest city in Hokkaidō, next to Sapporo. It has been a Core city since April 1, 2000. The city is currently well-known for the Asahiyama Zoo and Asahikawa Ramen.

As of 2008, the city has an estimated population of 355,851 and a density of 476 persons per km². The total area is 747.6 km².

Asahikawa is located almost in the center of Hokkaido, and is the second largest city in the prefecture after Sapporo. The city is full of natural splendor, with the magnificent Mt. Daisetsu-zan in the background and 120 rivers flowing through it. It is also the gateway for tourism to Soun Gorge and the Furano area. Asahikawa’s thriving art world has led it to be called a town for art. Fountains and sculptures dot the shopping park along Heiwa-dori Avenue, the road that leads straight from Asahikawa Station.

Situated on a hill overlooking the town, the Hokkaido Traditional Arts and Crafts Village is full of buildings resembling castles from the Middle Ages in Europe, and has the atmosphere of an amusement park. There is a gallery of works made using the world-famous Yukara-ori, the traditional textile fabric of Hokkaido, from which you can get a better understanding of traditional Japanese crafts.

Japan’s northernmost Zoo, Asahiyama Zoo is a one of the highlight of the city. The concept of the zoo is to provide an environment where each species can use their abilities and a space where each animal can relax.

Visitors enjoy watching diving polar bear, a spotted seal swim in the narrow tunnel and more very close at hand.

Also, Asahikawa has a ramen-noodle area the equal to that found in Sapporo, and its countless ramen-noodle restaurants are always busy.

Depending on your interests, there are many places of interest scattered around Asahikawa and the nearby regions.

Galleries or museums of photography, sculpture, painting, furniture, textiles, literature and brewing can be found, with much of the work not so subtly influenced by the geography, natural beauty, and harsh winter climate of Hokkaido.

Without it being readily known to foreigners or tourists, Hokkaido was, and still is, home to many extraordinary artists who have gained enormous popularity throughout Japan.

With this in mind, we would encourage you to visit some of the lesser well-known places on the tourist agenda, places which will give you an important insight into the birth of Hokkaido and Asahikawa, and which have been sorely underrated in the past.
